GAWD, this is hard to believe...
Nine years since 9/11/01.
I still remember that day like it was yesterday. So surreal. So terrifying. So... utterly unreal. Alternately horrifying and inspiring. A truly dark day in American history... and yet... a day that united us in a way that we have not been united since 1776.
I was in the journalism building at SHSU when the first plane hit the building. In class. The news reached us quickly. We all scurried to the conference room... with the Imax-sized screen on one wall. The Imax screen where we watched the rest of the events of that day unfold.
The events that will forever be seared into my memory. Of that second plane. That moment of shock and confusion and utter terror when everyone realized that it was no accident.
That moment when the world as we all knew it, changed forever. In ways that we are still trying to figure out; sort through.
In the years since then, we've fought a war that had nothing to do with the people who allegedly attacked us. We've argued over who exactly attacked us, and who knew what, and when they knew it.
Does the "official story" of how our security systems failed so badly on 9/11 satisfy my human curiosity
for answers, for blame... for transparent answers... NO.
Over three thousand Americans - and foreign visitors, people who were here LEGALLY, who were just going about their business and living their life.... lost their lives that terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
It is a day that I pray to God every night, this nation will NEVER have to see again.
I would love to see a TRUE, open and honest inquiry into the events of 9/11/01. I would love to see a "commission" report, in which those who wrote it don't come out a couple of years later to denounce it on the grounds that there was evidence they were not allowed to hear.
Do I think our government intentionally carried out the horrific 9/11 attacks?
I sincerely hope and pray not.
Do I think that there are flaws in the 9/11 commission report?
How could I not, when the majority of commissioners who put the report together have now spoken out, publicly, stating that their report is incomplete and flawed? That's the horrible reality we live in, whether most folks are willing to admit it or not.
But regardless of all of that. Outside of the politics. Outside of the debates. No matter who did what, or who is right and wrong. No matter who knew what, or when they knew it, or what mistakes were made. Regardless of what "truth" might ultimately be revealed & proved.
Over three thousand INNOCENT people lost their lives on 9/11/01.And regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum... I am begging you today... 9/11/10
NINE YEARS LATERPut everything else aside for just a few moments
, and join me in saying a prayer or thought of remembrance for those INNOCENTS who lost their lives.
For just a few minutes. Let the politics go. Let everything else go. And focus on one thing. The innocents, who lost their lives. A horrible fact that will not change, no matter what the "truth" ultimately is.
To those who lost a loved one that tragic day... know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. To those who still mourn for that day for whatever reason... know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.
To those who seek to never, ever let this be forgotten.... and those who will never be content until full transparency is attained... may God bless you and keep you... and may you never forget the innocents for whose justice you are fighting.
